Ok I have what they think is the 3rd worse case of Crohn's in the state of texas. As a result of that I got an illeostomy in Aug of 2003. In 2006 I lost all of my colon/ large bowel. They did leave 6 inches of rectum. I however have lost 6 inches of my terminal ileum. In feb of 2009 we reversed my ostomy. I am almost a year and a half post op and I am doing wonderfully!
This is the advice I would give. If you get a reversal make sure you and your doctor have some great med plans for the first year. I could take up to 8 lomitol pills a day. Plus I could take twice daily shots of occteritide (.040) I also was allowed up to 8 or 10 immoudiem per day. All of those meds were just for the runs. Now for the Crohn's I am on Cimzia. The doctors told me I would never have a firm bowel movement again. They were so wrong! Cimzia as far as I am concerned is a miracle drug! Now you are suppose to take 2 shots sub que every 28 days. After I had my reversal I asked the doctor to change it to 2 shots every 14 days. That made a world of difference! It took about 8 to 12 months, but I started to have firm stools on a regular basis! Now I am almost a year and a half post op and I don't have to take ANY meds for the runs. I just have to take my Cimzia shots every 21 days. I am hoping at some point we can even move the shots back to every 28 days. Having my ostomy reversed was one of the best decisions I ever made. I praise the Lord for allowing it to happen. It's been such a blessing! Now I admit for the first 3 months after the reversal I thought I was the biggest fool in the world. Make no mistake recovery is hard. The pain is some of the worst you will ever go thru. But it is so worth it! If I can answer any questions you have I will. Feel free to ask anything!
